GABRIELA HNILKOVA-JENKS PLACES 4TH AT THE DEUCEMAN HALF-IRONMAN TRIATHLON
Show Low, AZ – Gabriela Hnilkova-Jenks, a professional duathlete and triathlete and middle school teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico, ran the fastest half-marathon of the field to place 4th at the Deuceman Half-Ironman Triathlon on June 2nd in Show Low, Arizona. The race, held at an altitude of 5,600 to 6,500 feet, consisted of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run. Her total time of 5 hours, 22 minutes, and 51 seconds included splits of 39:39, 2:55:25, and 1:43:34, respectively.
“I had low blood sugar at about mile 30 on the bike,” said Gabriela. “I was eating like a pig during the first 10 to 15 kilometers of the run. I stopped at every aid station and ate oranges. That seemed to help and I was feeling much better at 15 kilometers. That’s where I finally started picking up the pace.”
“Gabi had another strong effort under less than ideal conditions,” said Coach Jason Karp. “Maintaininng blood glucose levels in a race this long is a challenge. She’s been training hard, and continues to impress me with her ability to excel at altitudes that leaves others breathless.”
